The early 20th century was a great time for blacks in Greenwood, OK. The oil boom brought tons of educated, wealthy blacks to the area and it became the Negro Wall Street for many prominent black businessmen.

Prior to its destruction, the predominantly black town was worth over 30 million dollars in today’s currency. Money circulated and stayed in the town because everything was black owned. From the airports to the movie theaters, Greenwood money only ever touched black hands.

In 1921, a devastating race riot resulted in the destruction of nearly 2000 homes and over millions of dollars worth of businesses were burned to the ground. From that day on, we were never able to return to that state again.

Here’s why….

12 Jul War on the Black Man: Imprisonment and Recidivism

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the war on drugs was perpetrated to imprison educated, enlightened black men. This came as no surprise for those who are aware of the government and it's long history of institutionalized racism. Unfortunately, it didn't ignite a conversation that needed to be had on how to reprimand the enforcers and how to compensate those who fell victim to this system.

16 May Black Panthers Documentary

When I first started my undergraduate studies under the criminal justice major, I was required to read a book titled, Last Man Standing: The Tragedy and Triumph of Geronimo Pratt written by Jack Olsen. This book was life changing. It painted a completely different picture of the Black Panthers and what they stood for. Since then I was completely obsessed with the activism of the Black Panthers. To me, they were the epitome of advancement of the colored people.

  • They knew their rights inside and out.
  • They were self- educated on the history of Black Americans.
  • They created programs to feed children breakfast.
  • They had drug prevention programs for addicts.
  • They were aggressive and not once did they express an agenda to discriminate against other minorities.

16 May What does Mel Jackson think about politics?

"We have to stop looking for white saviors."

 Dr. Umar Johnson
By this blog, you probably have an inkling as to where I stand when it comes to race and politics. Dr. Umar Johnson does an amazing job further expressing my opinion on this issue. I don't trust our government. This country was built on oppression and those who are in power have done a lot to sustain our role as minorities.

29 Mar Beyond Black History Month

Cheering for diversity

Black History Month is a great symbol of race relations in this country. For centuries, we've always had to belittle our experiences for the sake of Caucasian comfort.

  • We ignore racism because we don't want whites to feel guilty for what they did to our people.
  • We deny our culture and assimilate to satisfy the white standard of how one should act.
  • We allow ignorance and generalizations so that we don't offend their ignorant perspectives.

29 Mar Keys to Success: Reading for Pleasure

Malcolm X

One of the most influential books that I've ever had the pleasure to read is the The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley.  While, I appreciate Spike Lee for his incredible interpretation of the life of Malcolm X, it was this book that brought his story full circle. It has to be one of the top  non-fiction stories of our time, describing the complexities of a man who had to discover his activism.  The media tries to portray him as a deviant who was angry and filled with violence but through this book, you learn about how he grew and learned from his experiences. Prior to his death, he was extremely enlightened. I learned from this book as soon as I opened the first chapter and am indebted to it's knowledge and historical importance.

It's interesting because everyone wants to know the key's to success. This book was my first key. It's unlike what everybody else considers success because it's not based on material but the success of the mind and self empowerment. In fact, my keys offer self awareness and fulfillment in life, two things that can create a sturdy foundation and enough confidence to be successful both financially and mentally.

If you want to ride with me on this success train than join me in the path that we can create together. Read below and unlock your first key.
